If your lawn, trees, or shrubs have been experiencing chronic growth problems, your soil's nutrients may be to blame. In order to supplement the health and growth of your landscape, a soil test may be critical. All soils are not created equal. In fact, soil is constantly changing. Specific elements in soil nutrients can be diminished due to plant growth, leaching, or erosion. On the other hand, elements in soil nutrients can be enhanced when fertilizer or compost is added. To determine whether or not your soil is supplying the required nutrients for healthy plant growth, a soil test should be implemented. Through soil testing, the current "fertility status" of your soil can be measured which conveys what particular nutrients your soil may or may not be lacking.

One of the main soil properties measured during a soil test is the pH level. Most turfgrasses, flowers, and ornamental shrubs grow best in soil with a pH level between 6.1 and 6.9 (slightly acidic). Soils with a pH level below this range will benefit from the addition of lime. If the pH level is above this range, aluminum sulfate may need to be added.

Additional soil properties available for testing include texture and available nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium levels.
